A History of The Astor Club

Opened in December 1963 as Maxim's de Paris Chicago, The Astor Club was conceived by Nancy Florsheim Goldberg as the city's answer to the legendary Maxim's on Paris's Rue Royale. The building itself — designed by Bertrand Goldberg, the same audacious architect behind Marina City — rose above the Gold Coast as a tower of modern glamour.

Inside, it swiftly became Chicago's most storied address. The dining room rivaled the great restaurants of Europe; the Bagatelle Room ran backgammon until three in the morning; and downstairs, the city's first discotheque drew café society from across the country. The guest list read like a cultural hall of fame — Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, and The Rolling Stones all passed through. In August 1966, The Beatles held a press conference in this room, where John Lennon issued his famous apology to the world.

Maxim's closed in 1982. The space sat dormant for decades before being lovingly restored and reopened as The Astor Club — a private supper club carrying forward the spirit of old Chicago glamour. We are honored to host the first wedding to take place at this iconic location, in a room that has witnessed so much of our favorite city's history.

When do I need to RSVP by?

Please RSVP by September 1, 2026. You can RSVP using the link at the top of this page.

Where should I stay?

Our wedding weekend coincides with the Chicago Marathon, so hotel availability is limited and we were unable to secure a dedicated room block. We have put together a list of recommended hotels near the venue on the Travel page — we suggest booking as soon as possible.

What is the dress code?

The dress code is black tie required. For women: a black floor-length gown. For men: a classic black tuxedo (preferred) or black suit with dress shirt and tie. Please note that The Astor Club upholds this standard at the door. See the Attire page for full details.

What time does the ceremony start?

The ceremony begins at 6:00 PM. We recommend arriving 15–20 minutes early to find your seat. Full event details are on the Events page.

Are children invited?

We love your little ones, but our wedding will be an adults-only evening. We hope this gives you a chance for a fun night out!

Is there parking at the venue?

Yes, there is a parking garage adjacent to The Astor Club. Street parking and paid surface lots are also available nearby.

Where are you registered?
